How to help babies fall asleep, how to set baby sleep pattern ?

Every Mother is worried about the sleep behavior of their infants. Sleep Pattern of New born baby keeps on changing very frequently. A New Born only wakes up for feeding, our baby used to sleep for entire day and night and we were worried why is it happening.

Why new born baby keeps sleeping all time ?

We had to tickle baby’s leg, hands to keep her awake while feeding. This behavior is different for every infant but generally it happens with all infants aged 1-2 months. Doctors recommend feeding the infant every 2 hours as they have small stomach and should be fed in short spans to keep them nourished. Some babies are awake for every feed but some do not wake up even on tickling. Generally, newborns sleep about 8 to 9 hours in the daytime and about 8 hours at night adding to 15-16 hours of sleep every day.

At 6 to 8 weeks/ after 2 months most babies begin to sleep for shorter periods during the day and longer periods at night, though most babies continue to wake up to feed during the night. They also have shorter periods of REM sleep, and longer periods of deep, non-REM sleep. Somewhere between 4 and 6 months, experts say most babies are capable of sleeping for a stretch of 8 to 12 hours through the night. You can help your baby get their sooner, if that’s your goal, by teaching him good sleep habits from the start.

After 12 Months the sleep pattern of most babies are stabilized. If the baby is having a good feed they can sleep throughout night. From 12-18 months babies may or might not need feed during night. At this stage most mothers start thinking of stopping Mothers milk and getting to diet plan for their babies with good nutrition.

How to identify that your baby needs sleep?

Baby is crying without any reason.

Yawning.

Rubbing Eyes.

Closing eyes.

How can you help your baby fall asleep?

Not all babies know how to put themselves to sleep. When it is time for bed, many parents want to rock or breastfeed a baby to sleep.

Establishing a routine at bedtime is a good idea. However, be sure that the baby does not fall asleep while eating or in your arms. This may become a pattern and the baby may begin to expect to be in your arms in order to fall asleep. When the baby briefly awakens during a sleep cycle, he or she may not be able to go back to sleep on his or her own. Most experts recommend allowing a baby to become sleepy in your arms, then placing him or her in the bed while still awake. This way the baby learns how to go to sleep on his own.

Playing soft music while your baby is getting sleepy is also a good way to help establish a bedtime routine.

Most pediatricians recommend exhausting the baby in the evening by a good walk and play. Also, bathing the baby will make the baby relaxed and have uninterrupted sleep during the night.
